i don’t want to read lgbtq fiction i want to read genre fiction with lgbtq protags

  • the scorpion rules by erin bow (dystopian, bi girl protag, haven’t read but i hear it’s awesome)

TRANS

that’s all i’ve got right now! i’m a lesbian so the lesbian section has the most books in it lol, but if anyone else wants to add some more books for gbt people (especially trans because Yikes that section is small), that would be awesome!

Reblogging this again to add some. A lot of these are mixed groups, so I’ve left them loosely organized, genre in bold:

  • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin – Dystopian Fantasy. PoC cast, transgender, gay, and bisexual characters.
  • A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray – Historical Fantasy. Lesbian and bisexual characters.
  • The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater – Urban Fantasy. Gay and bisexual perspective characters.
  • The Circle by Mats Strandberg & Sara Elfgren – Urban Fantasy/Horror – Lesbian and bisexual perspective characters.
  • On The Edge of Gone by Corinne Duyvis – Post-Apolcalyptic/Sci-Fi – Transgender characters
  • And I Darken by Kiersten White – Historical Fiction – Gay (and bisexual???) perspective characters.

Drive-by:

  • Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee – Space Opera – the heroine is a lesbian with an immortal bisexual traitor/military genius living in her head. The author is a trans man.
  • Dragon Oak by Sam Farren (available on Amazon/Kindle at the very least) – High Fantasy – the heroine is either bisexual or a lesbian and the badass knight she travels with is a lesbian. There’s also gay kings and lesbian queens with adopted children who are completely able to succeed their parents.

Also, lesbian non-human lady who is the best character ever and I love her.

It’s part of a series that I don’t have the funds to read the rest of, but the first book is easily one of my faves ever.

@fuckyeahasexual has a list of books and media that has ace/aro spec protagonists, which I notice are missing from the original list.

the-stray-liger:

The Iron Bull would be 300% ok with dating an asexual Inquisitor because he sees sex as a hobby he can share with others rather than as a statement related to romance and that is canon because you actually bang him and THEN you get the option to pursue a romance and I’m 300% sure that if they’d written it properly you’d  be able to romance that huge fucking nerd without sex by just being very enthusiastic about dragons

Fenris would know the names of the forks and where to place them

yarking:

I want fic with the kirkwall gang having to deal with a fancy-schmancy socialite thing and Hawke brings along Fenris and everyone thinks he’s going to be a disaster because hurmhurm grumpy angry elf but it turns out he actually knows significantly more than most of the about etiquette a “high culture” because while it’s true he was Danarius’ bodyguard Danarius also trained him to pour wine… and set the table, and keep polite, informed conversation about innocuous topics like their provided food or entertainment, and basically how to engage Danarius’ political rivals without embarrassing himself or Danarius.

I want fic where Fenris has had a few voice lessons, dancing lessons, art lessons, not enough to be particularly skillful at anything, but enough to be able to recognize talent and skill in others and navigate social circles, all the while Danarius’ hand on his shoulder with a honey-sick smile, crowing internally that he could sculpt his pet elf into such a competent valet and relishing the discomfort of his political associates when they discover they’ve been having a stimulating conversation not with Danarius’ favored apprentice but with his little wolf.

Just… give me cultivated cultured!Fenris, who was exposed to these luxuries to further weaponize him in a social capacity, who is as clever as he is strong, who was never taught to read, but still canonically knows four languages. And if you really want to blow my mind, maybe a Fenris whose exposure to fine arts influenced his relationship with freedom, where his tutors are careful to avoid topics that might give him ideas of escape, but the art and music and history created with those themes occasional slip by and resonate. A Fenris that yearns for those connections at the same time as spurning them, because the only reason he has access to these things is the “benevolence” of a master who wants to use this enrichment as a gimmick. Who drinks the wine he served, who knows how good it is, savors it, and who smashes the bottle in defiance, but who still drank the wine.

And for pity’s sake, Fenris who is as rude as he is polite. Half his dialogue is him being a little shit, and the other half is him apologizing for coming off as a little shit.

Thinking about my inquisitor Zee Lavellan

She has depression and anxiety and treats it with herbs (mostly).

Checking the DA herbs, the only one that touches on mental health is spindleweed, which is used pallatively rather than actively.

So, that sounds like a “better than nothing” option for Zee, but only if she can’t find stuff that actually helps.

Going off actual historic herbal remedies, there’s St. John’s wort (for low mood) and cava root (for anxious thoughts), which could be just added to Thedas as more specialised herbs that don’t come up in the codexs.

Cava root works as a name but St. John’s wort isn’t gonna work.

I’ve come up with some options:

1) Seejan wort (St. John is sometimes used as a name, pronounced as sijun)

2) Cathaire’s wort (St John was the apostle of Jesus like Cathaire was to Andraste)

3) Sylaise’s wort (as the elven goddess of healing herbs like St John is the patron saint of healing)

4) or a combination of them, with elves calling it Sylaise’s Joy (reference to it’s antidepressant effect) and the common name being Seejun Wort or Cathaire’s Wort.

I’m gonna go with the last one. There’s something really nice about calling it Sylaise’s Joy!
