Zoos prevent extinction. This is why I support zoos. This is why the world should support zoos.

THIS.

After volunteering at my local zoo for 3 years, I still had friends and family members preaching to me how zoos are animal jail. No. They’re not. A lot of animals would be extinct without them. Yea, there are bad zoos, but you hear about those more because news focuses on bad things.

This is what I do guys! This is the sort of work I’m involved in. Make sure you support good zoos and not the backyard kinds with squalid conditions though!

Now everyone on Tumblr has access to a tiny gif of Maui dancing back and forth while slapping his pecs. I feel like I’ve created something stupid yet wonderful, so…

what can I say

And thanks to link-sharing on Discord, you can now have an even smaller version of him.

These are all the same size on mobile, the quality just goes down exponentially which somehow makes it even better.

I come from England where guides and scouts are still separated and I never joined because young girl guides are called ‘brownies’ and while the intention was probably the cake, brownies are also local magic creatures that clean and do chores for milk and it. Just never sat right with me. That the girls are ‘cleaners’ and the boys (who are cubs at that age) were something much cooler.

fuckyeahasexual:

I also thought it was weird that young girl scouts were called brownies too. And thought it was an age thing but the lore in the UK would definitely make it worse. Cub is gender neutral anyways?

So I’m a brownie leader and I wanted to just say a couple things about this!

Brownies are named after the helpful sprite and though originally, (brownies were founded in 1914) it probably was because little girls were going to be home makers, it has developed now into being kind and doing good things for yourself and others. The brownie motto is ‘lend a hand’ and the law is ‘to think of others before our selves and do a good turn every day’.

The entirety of girl guiding isn’t to keep girls from doing ‘boy things’ and to keep them out the scouts (which in the UK is a mixed group, though mostly male), it’s to give girls a safe place to learn and experience and to be little girls without having to ‘put up’ with boys.

That means that along with having a ‘spa night’ or a baking evening, we also do out door activities like swimming, camping and building rockets! Honestly, I’ve always seen Guiding as being more encompassing than Scouts because we do everything they do and more, without any toxic masculinity of ‘boys don’t bake cake!!’. Also we then have cake which is great.

That’s not to say that brownies is for every little girl, not everyone likes the same stuff, but we aren’t trying to make little girls into house cleaner Barbie or anything. Honestly none of my brownies know how to tidy up after themselves for starters haha!

TLDR; yes it’s an outdated term, but it represents more than just being a cleaner. Brownies is about giving little girls a chance to be little girls in any form that they see fit!

Also we have nothing to do with the delicious cake, though we do make that joke a lot.

help please?

so I’m presenting at a conference next week about how names, narratives & imagery relate to public engagement with museums

could you guys do me a HUGE life-saving favour & take this survey? https://greerstothers.typeform.com/to/md8Jj7

it’s quick (10 questions) and mostly multiple choice. I would very, very, very much appreciate it!! & if 100 people answer, I will buy Pangur a SECOND tiny hat!
